The site features large and beautifully decorated rock-cut tombs hewn into the cliffs belonging to some of the period's most notable nomarchs (administrators), including Amenemhat Ameny, Khnumhotep II, Khwty, and Baqet III, as well as over 800 shaft tombs in the lower cemeteries.
The Avenue of Sphinxes is a historic pathway that once connected the Luxor Temple and the Karnak Temple Complex. It was lined with sphinx statues on both sides, creating a grand avenue for processions and religious ceremonies.
