In 1985, the old Jerash rest house was reclaimed and developed to be used as a museum. The first exhibition in it was called (Jordan Through the Ages).

It contained the best archaeological finds in Jordan, especially in Jerash. Later, the museum became concerned with the archaeological finds found in the Jerash region, and it was developed from the outside and inside, and new display cabinets were added to it, which was taken into account to accommodate the pieces found in different eras (from the Neolithic era until the Mamluk period). These pieces were displayed in a historical sequence and according to the types and uses daily.

The museum contains a huge collection of pottery, glass, metal, coins, jewelry, precious stones, some statues, marble, and stone altars, in addition to mosaic paintings from various regions of Jerash, which were provided with adequate explanations.

The area surrounding the museum was used to display monuments engraved with inscriptions in Greek and Latin, marble statues, and stone coffins engraved with plant and geometric shapes.

It is worth noting that the city of Jerash (Gerasa) was one of the ten cities known as Decapolis, and is considered one of the largest and richest Roman cities in diverse architecture. It contains Roman temples, colonnaded streets, terraces, bridges, baths, and memorial buildings such as:

The Arch of Triumph, the Path of the Nymphs, and the Hippodrome, in addition to eighteen churches, most of which are covered with colorful mosaics, and all the city is surrounded by a complete wall and gates overlooking the four sides.
