Qattara depression project

The Qattara Depression is located in the dry Libyan Desert, the eastern desert northwest of Egypt. It covers about 7,000 square miles (18,100 square km) and contains salt lakes and marshes, and drops to 435 feet (133 metres) below sea level.

The idea of the project is very briefly based on the construction of a canal from the Mediterranean coast to flow into the Qattara Depression region, to generate electricity and desalinate seawater, to irrigate hundreds of thousands of hectares and to establish agricultural, industrial , towns and mining and tourist communities around the project to the west and east, all as part of the Grand Development Project for the area stretching from South El Alamein to South Sallum in urban areas and exploiting it for development, agriculture, tourism and mining to accommodate 34 million people over the next 40 years.

The depression was created by the influence of time and man on the environment. It was carved out of sedimentary rock of Tertiary age. Its downward slopes descend to pediments that slope southwards to an axial valley, which is now covered with salt crusts, sabkha and salt deposits.

After the retreat of the Mediterranean waters, the Western Desert was formed. A major flow from the Gilf Kebir highlands flowed north to near the site of the Siwa oasis, its silt now covered by the deposits of the Great Sand Sea. If it reached the Mediterranean basin, it may have done so via the system of Sahabi canals in Libya.

Apparently, it became inactive after its waters were diverted underground. When the Mediterranean water is recharged, the underground water and the change in climatic systems are diminished, when the influencing factors of the deserts have completed the formation of the depression to give it its present configuration and character.
