Gamal Abdel Nasser

He was born on 15 January 1918 in Alexandria. He was an officer in the Egyptian army, Prime Minister and then President (1956-70) of Egypt.

While serving in the Egyptian army in Sudan, Nasser met three fellow officers Zakariyya Muhyi al-Din (Zakaria Mohieddine), later Vice-President of the United Arab Republic Abd al-hakim amir, later Field Marshal; and Anwar el-Sadat, who would succeed Nasser as President.

At the end of October 1956, Israel, Britain and France attacked Egypt. The Suez Canal was occupied, but the Soviets and the UN put pressure on Israel, Britain and France to withdraw, and the Suez Canal was left in 1957.

In 1958 he oversaw the unification of Egypt and Syria as the United Arab Republic, but in 1961 Syria withdrew from the entity.

In 1967, Egypt called for the withdrawal of peacekeepers from the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula. Egypt and five other Arab countries prepared for a united strike against Israel, but Israel attacked the Six Day War with the destruction of the Egyptian air force on 5 June. captured the whole of Sinai and crossed the Suez Canal. Nasser tried to resign, but the Egyptian people remained loyal to his return. After the Six Day War, Nasser accepted.

In July 1970, the Aswan High Dam was completed. Two months later, Nasser died of a heart attack in Cairo.
